James Russell, MSCP, NCC, LPC

Family Based Training Faculty

James T. Russell, MSCP, NCC, LPC, is a licensed counselor with 20+ years of experience working with children, teens, and adults from diverse backgrounds in various settings, including mentorship, mental health in classrooms, group and individual therapy for substances, vocational training, family, couples, and autism support.

He co-leads a family therapy training program at UPMC, welcoming clinicians and interns to develop skills through live supervision in a team setting. He also teaches as an Adjunct Instructor at Chatham University’s Counseling Psychology program, including empowering Master’s and PsyD students.

James excels at recognizing potential and coaching clinicians in family engagement, with the goal of preparing more competent and passionate professionals to address complex family needs.

He employs an eclectic, client-centered approach, including eco-systemic structural family therapy, solution-focused therapy, CBT, and mindfulness.

He is passionate about helping individuals and families become healthier, physically, mentally, and spiritually, in a respectfully curious manner.
